Artist Statement

Drawing is essential to my art practice. Much like “Harold and the Purple Crayon”, the beloved children’s book, I relish taking a line for a walk without knowing where I am going and trusting that even if I get lost, I can find my way home. Beginning with white cloth, my blank canvas, I make marks and shapes by pulling thickened dyes through a silkscreen. Lifting the screen to reveal the image below is magic to me. I repeatedly respond to what came before to change the surface of the fabric to a finished piece.

Sometimes I make lines and figures with squeeze bottles with filled with thickened dyes or apply thickened dyes directly onto the fabric’s surface with a brush or scrapper. All the fabrics arewashed and photographed. Then I decide if the fabric should be cut up and re-assembled much like a collage or if it is to become a “whole cloth art quilt”.

My work relates to imagery that is drawn from the human figure, nature, patterns and symbols. Of late, I have been exploring circles as a metaphor for this world and its’ many mysteries. The circle can be interpreted in many ways; the moon, sun, plant life, human life, a metaphor for the passing of time, my ideas and inspirations from this simple shape are infinite. Finally, I use intricate and creative stitching to bring out the textural element on each work. A sense ofimprovisation and play on the road to the finished piece is vital to my art making.
